Since atomoxetine is not a stimulant, it is not a controlled substance. Therefore, this medication has low potential for abuse unlike other ADHD medication. Instead, Strattera works with norepinephrine to reduce the symptoms of ADHD. It also helps with depression and anxiety Atomoxetine is often used as an autism medication also. The most common side effects of atomoxetine include fatigue, insomnia, decreased appetite, weight loss, constipation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, irritability, and sexual dysfunction. Other more serious side effects include hypertension and tachycardia (fast heart rate). Atomoxetine can worsen pre-existing heart disease and narrow angle glaucoma. As with other antidepressants, this drug most likely also increases suicidal ideation or suicide attempts in children and adolescence. This medication was tested in children and adults in several very short-term studies. Based on this research, the FDA approved atomoxetine for children and adults. Preliminary studies show that Strattera is comparable to Ritalin for the suppression of ADHD symptoms. However, results are not immediate since this medication will take several weeks to obtain the desired effect. On the other hand, atomoxetine can be administered once or twice each day eliminating the need for midday dosing. Levels of B vitamins and coQ-10 are depleted when taking atomoxetine. Therefore, you need a good vitamin B complex and coQ-10 supplement when taking this medication. Treatment of ADHD should also include behavior modification, organizational skills, time management skills, and education accommodations. Please discuss atomoxetine with your physician and pharmacist if you have any more questions or any concerns.
