What Is The Listening Program?my children with Asperger’s Syndrome, PDD-NOS, ADHD, CAPD and Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Actually, The Listening Program has been the best autism therapy for my children! I would highly recommend this program for anyone with the above diagnoses over three years of age. First, I would like to tell you about the benefits for our family. And then I would like to tell you about the program itself. My 14 year old son with Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD, central auditory processing disorder , and sensory integration dysfunction used to be extremely irritable and rather aggressive. Everything bothered him and overwhelmed him. He was so anxious and depressed that he hardly ever smiled and laughed. He was also not able to concentrate well either. After 32 weeks of using The Listening Program (Classic Kit), he is now more focused, not aggressive, and much less irritable. He is able to cope with various sensory inputs. Now, he laughs and smiles most of the time. He is a totally different young man! My 11 year old daughter is neurotypical, but does demonstrate considerable sensory integration dysfunction. In particular, she has vestibular and proprioception difficulties which affect her balance. This situation may not be much problem for most people. However, she wants to be a professional ballet dancer in a Christian ballet company like Ballet Magnificat! After 32 weeks of using The Listening Program (Classic Kit), her balance and core stability are much better. She has less motion sickness. And she is less annoyed by sensory inputs. Her dancing abilities have made significant strides and now she is more likely to achieve her dancing dream! My 9 year old daughter with PDD-NOS, ADHD, central auditory processing disorder , and sensory integration dysfunction used to have a lot of stimming behaviors along with communication and language difficulties. She literally bounced from one activity to another and back again. Memory was also a problem. This program is based on the concepts of Alfred Tomatis, MD who pioneered this field of therapeutic listening. The Arcangelos Chamber Ensemble recorded high quality mostly classical variations from composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Bach, and Vivaldi. Since the recordings are all acoustic (live music) and not synthesized, the music provides a whole range of frequencies. This music was then carefully and specifically engineered with various advanced sound processing techniques including Full Spectrum, Filtration, Blending, Panning, Audio Bursting , Spatial Dynamics, Spatial Surround, Spatial Surround Dynamic, and ABC Modular Design. ABC Modular Design refers to the three phases of auditory training. There are 3 five minute tracks per 15 minute segment. The first track is A for the accommodation phase. The second track is B for the training phase. And the third track is C for integration. Track B incorporates the greatest quantity and intensity of filtered sound with audio bursting. Tracks A and C provide for easy transitions to and from the B training track. These meaningful sound vibrations travel from the outer ear to the middle ear and then to the inner ear. The sound is converted to nerve impulses which move through the brainstem to the brain. The brain can establish new neural pathways and can organize new synapses when presented with specific sensory sensation with appropriate frequency, intensity, and duration. Hearing is intimately connected with other sensory pathways within the brainstem and brain. We actually hear with our entire body. Therefore, proper sound processing can theoretically improve the following areas ultimately impacting school work, mood, behavior, and self-esteem.
What an earful! (Pun intended!) The Listening Program was previously available only as the Classic Kit. Now, The Listening Program is available as the Level One Kit. The Level One Kit uses high definition recordings to further increase the effectiveness of the program. This high definition kit also includes a Sensory Integration CD and a Speech and Language CD since most individuals also require these additional CDs. In addition, the first CD is includes more preparatory listening. Furthermore, these high definition CDs are available with or without nature sounds! Level One is the way to go! Now you may be wondering how to do The Listening Program! It is really very easy! You would just listen to the ten 60 minute CDs in The Listening Program according to one of the following schedules.
We choose just 15 minutes per day because we felt that life is hectic enough! You will most likely get quicker results if you choose either of the other two options. My daughter with PDD-NOS finds that her penmanship assignments and drawings are much better when she listens to the program simultaneously. My son with AS likes to play with his Legos while he listens to the program. An upright sitting posture is most helpful. However, you should not play computer/video games and watch TV at the same time because they are too visually stimulating. By the way, the second cycle is needed in order to make sure that you received sufficient auditory training to maintain any permanent results. You would then proceed to maintenance training of about three times per week. Therapeutic listening exercises the two tiny muscles in your ear and trains the brain. And just like any exercise program, training and maintenance are extremely important. You have to use it or lose it!
You also need to use authorized headphones and CD player in order for the high quality sounds to be delivered appropriately to your ear. The Listening Program will most likely not work well if you do not use authorized equipment. I would also like to mention that this Level One program is also available on an iPod for all of you tech savvy individuals! So far, I have only discussed the basic program which is used by most individuals. However, your child may require augmentation of this program with specialized CDs and/or preparatory listening CDs depending on their individual conditions. They may also require even more specialized equipment. The specialized CDs and equipment are only needed in the more severe cases. Now, you must want to know where you can get The Listening Program! Well, you can only get TLP from an Authorized Provider. Luckily, I am an Authorized Provider!! I would love to help you and your child!! As your Authorized Provider, I would prefer to see you and your child in person for a personal consultation. However, you may not live anywhere near me. So, we would need to correspond by email and phone. So, I would need you to complete an easy questionnaire and simple checklist. Then, I would completely evaluate this information, and provide you with an individualized recommendation for equipment and CDs. I would explain how to obtain the authorized equipment and any augmented listening if needed most economically. I would also arrange for the company to send you The Listening Program directly. And, of course, I would answer your questions! Now, you may think that The Listening Program with the consultation, and the equipment, and the shipping and handling would cost way more than you could afford. However, the prices are extremely affordable! The cost is much less expensive than most other autism therapies, such as occupational therapy, RDI, and ABA and many others. Since you will be using The Listening Program and the equipment for years, the cost per use is actually extremely low. Well, I just figured out that the cost for the consultation, the Level One Kit and basic equipment (headphones and CD player) for the first 40 weeks is just about $2.41 per day! Wow! What a bargain!! And since most everyone in the family can also use The Listening Program, the cost is even lower per person!! The cost per day is even more dramatically reduced when you average the cost over years! By the way, I do not even need a prescription from your physician in order to provide you with this therapeutic listening program. However, I can give you a receipt for you to turn in to your insurance company which may or may not pay for the program and the equipment.
