What Are The Risks And Benefits Of Antipsychotic Medication?

Typical And Atypical Antipsychotic Medication Is Used
To Control Mood, Aggression, And Self-Injurious Behavior.

Antipsychotic medication is usually used for psychosis and schizophrenia, but they are also being used more frequently with autism. However, there is no connection between these conditions.

Previously, autism may have been frequently misdiagnose as schizophrenia. However, due to autism awareness, individuals are more likely to be correctly diagnosed now.

These medications work on dopamine to reduce irritability and fluctuations. They are also called neuroleptics. The neuroleptics may be either typical or atypical.

The older typical antipsychotics are listed below.

  • Haldol (haloperidol)
  • Mellaril (thioridazine)
  • Prolixin (fluphenazine)
  • Stelazine (trifluoperazine)
  • Thorazine (chlorpromazine)
  • Trilafon (perphenazine)

The newer atypical antipsychotics are listed here.

  • Clozaril (clozapine)
  • Geodon (ziprasidone)
  • Risperdal (risperidone)
  • Seroquel (quetiapine)
  • Zyprexa (olanzapine)

Both groups have similar side effects, but the newer atypical group has less risk of tardive dyskinesia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome than the older group.

Tardive dyskinesia is involuntary movements that are debilitating and occasionally permanent. Facial movements, such as lip smacking, tongue protrusion, and grimacing, start first. Then, neck and limb spasms appear later.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a serious condition involving high blood pressure, confusion, sweating, muscle spasms, and fever. You must rush to the emergency room to avoid kidney and muscle damage.

The neuroleptic medications cause deficiencies in vitamin B2 and coQ-10. Therefore, good vitamin B complex and coQ-10 supplements are necessary with neuroleptics.

If you have any questions or concerns about these medications, please consult with your physician and pharmacist.
