What Is Art Therapy?

Art therapy improves communication and social skills
as well as behavior for individuals with autism.

Most kids love art.

They can color and draw and paint and sculpt and glue and cut for hours.

Art is a highly creative process.

When you do art, you are expressing your inner self. And expressing your inner self is wonderful therapy for individuals with autism!

Your child need not have any art talent. However, many individuals with autism do exhibit special artistic abilities. These autistic savants should be highly encouraged to further develop their natural talents.

Art therapists usually have a degree in art and education with training in counseling and psychology. They usually are knowledgeable about various art forms including drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Internal conflicts and stressful situations can be worked out through artistic expression leading to less anxiety and depression. Ultimately, self-esteem and behavior improve significantly.

The art therapist will usually work individually with your autistic child at first to develop trust and understanding. Eventually, the sessions will occur in group settings to enhance communication and social skills.

You can even try art therapy at home just by providing your ownand art tables and easels and by encouraging your child in their artistic endeavors.

Art is definitely a fun form of autism therapy!
