Can Blood Pressure Medication Be Helpful For Autism?

Blood Pressure Medication Is Used For Several Autism Symptoms

Beta blockers and alpha blockers are two classes of blood pressure medication that have been shown to be beneficial for individuals with autism.

They work on the beta and alpha receptors throughout the body to block the action of epinephrine and norepinephrine.

Because these medications reduce blood pressure, regular blood pressure checks are important especially when just starting treatment.

Your blood pressure may be too low if you get dizzy especially when suddenly standing up or if you feel like you may black out. Lay down with your feet elevated and seek medical attention immediately.

Examples of beta blockers are listed below.

  • Corgard (nadolol)
  • Inderal (propranolol)
  • Visken (pindolol)

Some common alpha blockers are listed here.

  • Catapres (clonidine)
  • Tenex (guanfacine)

These medications have been used to reduce aggression, self-injurious behavior, insomnia, and anxiety. Beta blockers are also prescribed for individuals with migraine headaches.

Common side effect are fatigue, sexual dysfunction, and lightheadedness. You should not use beta blockers if you have asthma or diabetes.

Rebound hypertension may result if you suddenly stop these medications. Always take these medications as directed by your physician.

These medications reduce levels of coQ-10 throughout your body resulting in fatigue. Supplementation with coQ-10 is strongly advised when taking these medications.

Please contact your physician or pharmacist if you have any concerns about these medications.
