You may already homeschool your children, or you may want to homeschool your children, or you may want to know more about homeschooling! Well, a Christian homeschool group is an important part of homeschooling! You do not want to join just any group. You want to join a group that will meet your needs as well as the needs of your children. Perhaps we can help you! We are CHEC-Mount Orab and we are affiliated with the Christian Home Educators of Cincinnati. So, you may have already guessed that we are a non-denominational Christian group of individuals who believe in homeschooling our children. We provide support for Christian homeschooling parents as well as activities and field trips for homeschooling students ages 6-18. We accommodate younger children of group members during meetings. Our meetings are the second Friday of every month from 1 pm (promptly!) until 2:30 pm at the United Wesleyan Church at 110 Oak Street in Mount Orab, Ohio from September through May. We have five separate events occurring simultaneously at our meetings:
Wow! We do a lot! The unit studies emphasize fun while sneaking in education. Last year the children learned about various countries – art, food, dance, geography, stories, missionaries, etc. This year the children will learn about animals – songs, dance, stories, history, geography, etc. Parents take turns leading these unit studies. Open meetings are held during June, July, and August. These meetings are open to anyone already homeschooling or seriously considering homeschooling. In addition, field trips are scheduled throughout the year at various places and times. Most events are within 30 minutes from Mount Orab. Please be aware that we start all field trips promptly at the scheduled time! Previous events have included the following:
We usually schedule at least one field trip per month. Most field trips are free, but some do involve a nominal fee. I should note that all meetings and field trips are entirely discretionary. There are never any mandatory events! After all, we believe in homeschooling where you decide what is best for your child! We also believe in service opportunities! Last year we sang songs for the residents of a nursing home and we planted flowers at a church. We are always looking for meaningful service projects! During May we have our Share Fair where each child has the opportunity to share something with the rest of our Christian homeschool group. They can share anything (or nothing)! My son shared his Lego film-making process. My older daughter discussed and demonstrated ballet pointe shoes. And my younger daughter showed her horse notebooking project. In addition, this year we will have various clubs and outings just for the teens. We are starting with a Computer Club at All About Computers in Mount Orab. Look for more events and outings for the teens in the near future! We even have kids with disabilities in our group including high functioning autism (Asperger’s Syndrome and PDD-NOS), ADHD, learning disabilities, sensory integration, and others. We will try to accommodate disabilities as much as possible. I would also like to mention that part of my personal ministry is helping others to learn more about homeschooling and to start homeschooling. I can arrange to speak more with you either before or after a regular meeting. Now, you probably want to know how you can become a member of our Christian homeschool group! First, you are welcome to attend one meeting before you join to see if we are right for you and your family. Then, all you need to do would be to submit our application, our Christian statement of faith, and $20 annual dues (made out to Rhonda Proffitt, our Treasurer) to me. You will need to have sent in your Home Education Notification Form, too. (Sorry, but we do not accept any form of public school at home.) I will review your paperwork and then present you with your membership card! Then, you are a member of our CHEC-Mount Orab Christian homeschool group and are entitled to come to our meetings and field trips! Simple! Well, I believe that I have just about covered most everything about our Christian homeschool group. I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting of the CHEC-Mount Orab Christian homeschool group! Please fill out the following form if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, or anything else! Take care, Valerie L. Richey, MD, ND
