Neural development starts at the base of the spinal cord and continues upward to the cerebral cortex. Then, neural development proceeds laterally from one hemisphere to the other hemisphere. Many children with autism appear to have faulty neural development leading to sensory integration dysfunction and manifesting as learning disabilities and behavioral problems. Carl Delacato at noticed that some children had significant distortions to their senses resulting in hypersensitivity, hyposensitivity, or white noise (internal static). He believed that these distortions resulted when neural development did not proceed in the normal upward and then lateral directions. He also found that a continuum of severity existed as a result of improper brain development. Glenn Dorman and Carl Delacato then developed various brain stimulation activities along with sensory exercises to rebuild these faulty connections leading to improved perceptions and processing. Delacato International has various Delacato centers available throughout the world to assist you and your autistic child.
A team of trained Delacato specialists evaluate your child and then recommend a home program consisting of 2 - 5 minute activities and exercises throughout the day. You would then return to their facility several times each year for follow-up visits and additional instruction, if needed. They are currently in the process of compiling available research about their Return HOME
