Individuals with autism and sensory integration dysfunction have inefficient neurological processing capabilities especially in their motor and sensory areas. This signal delay can lead to many problems with behavior, social skills and communication abilities. The Interactive Metronome (IM) program attempts to improve brain processing speed. Computer generated tones are delivered to your headphones. You then repeat various rhythms with hand and foot exercises. Immediate feedback is available. In order to perform these exercises and improve scores, you must learn to concentrate effectively for an extended time. Eventually your internal clock will also improve resulting in better quality sleep and improved sleep-wake cycles. With a better sense of intrinsic timing, social and communication skills will also improve. The motor skills involve planning and sequencing which also help balance and coordination. Improved overall neurological functioning will lead to improved behavior.
My children use the extremely fun and highly entertaining Bop It Extreme to improve their reflexes and response time.
Bop It Extreme is an electronic game that verbally tells you to pull it, twist it, spin it, flick it, and bop it to an ever increasing faster rhythm. Various other noises and sounds as well as colored lights are present which enhance concentration. This game is geared more to an individual with high functioning autism. Bop It Blast is the original simpler game which would be ideal for individuals with moderate to high functioning autism
