How Can Autism In The Family
Lead To A Personal Mission?

Your personal mission will be shaped and formed
by your experience with autism.

Autism in the Christian home can be devastating.

However, it can also be a blessing!

It can lead to a personal mission for the family and for individual members of the family. And it can help others in the community.

How can this be?

Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Thus, God can turn something as distressing as autism into something beneficial.

I know that my faith has been greatly deepened through my journey with my kids with autism. And my children’s faith has grown, too. We all look at others with disabilities much differently and realize more fully that everyone is a child of God. And God placed every person in our family and in our church for a reason.

For example, my experiences with autism led me to help others with autism medically and to create this website about autism. Then, God led me to discover that there is a link between autism and Lyme disease where I can help even more people.

My son with Asperger’s Syndrome and chronic Lyme disease would like to pursue a degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from The Ohio State University. Then, he wants to find cures for autism and Lyme disease through a research career.

My older daughter with chronic Lyme disease has developed strong analytical skills and pertinent knowledge while living with and working with her siblings with autism. She would like to pursue a career in counseling or other therapies.

My younger daughter with PDD-NOS and chronic Lyme disease has a heart for animals and her autism therapies have centered around animals. Now, she would like to help others with therapy animals such as horses, dogs, and alpacas .

So, we all believe that our encounter with autism has helped each of us to develop our personal mission.

Perhaps, the autism in your family will direct you along your specific path as well. Even if your individual ministry is not related directly to autism, your character can be shaped positively and your faith can be deepened to help others in your own unique way.

I encourage you to investigate other questions and answers about the Christian perspective of autism.
