Teach Your Special Needs Child With Quarter Mile Math
Quarter Mile Math is an award-winning, self-motivating, self-competitive math program perfect for special needs kids – and all other kids, too!
Is your child with autism or other special needs – or you - tired of doing boring math drills?
Does your child – or you – burst into tears when it is time to practice math facts?
Do you both run and hide when the flash cards appear?
If so, you are not alone!
Usually, learning math facts is pure drudgery and tremendously boring!
So, how do you make math fun?
You use Quarter Mile Math!
My daughter with PPD-NOS and ADHD has struggled with her math facts for years. We have tried everything – flash cards, drill sheets, awards, and more.
However, she really did not accomplish much until she started using Quarter Mile Math.
Now, she loves practicing her math facts, and actually wants to use this program in her free time! Awesome!
So, what is this math program all about?
First, you choose either a car (“awesome smoking dragsters”) or a horse (“wild riderless running horses”). What boy or girl does not love at least one of these choices! If undecided, the program allows you to switch back and forth.
As you answer math facts, you can see the car or horse move across the screen! Your figure gains speed each time you answer a problem correctly. You compete against your 5 previous best attempts so you can see yourself getting better.
Your computer time is highly productive since you do a lot of math in a short period of time on a focused subject. Also, you will learn at your maximum rate, and build your math confidence quickly.
Your scores are tracked over time, and you can see your progress in every topic. You can choose which topics you work on for a given session.
So simple and yet so effective!
This program uses all three learning styles: visual, kinesthetic, and auditory. Studies have shown that learning is enhanced by using all of these learning studies. Furthermore, individuals with autism are usually visual learners and this program is highly visual.
The kinesthetic component comes from using the keyboard. A side benefit is improving keyboarding skills. There are initial exercises in keyboarding where you would just type back the numbers that you see and hear on the screen.
Most individuals with autism have central auditory processing disorder. This program will also help this disorder through its auditory component.
I would like to mention that this program is not only for special needs kids . It is also for accelerated or gifted children, and for all children in between. And it is for all ages and both genders, too!
Math topics range from basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) to fractions, percents, and decimals. There are even sections on estimation, math strategies, integers, and prealgebra equations! This program covers all arithmetic operations!
Quarter Mile Math comes in three levels:
- Level 1 for topics in grades K – 3 and users in grades K - 12
- Level 2 for topics in grades 4 – 6 and users in grades 4 - 12
- Level 3 for topics in grades 6 – 9 and users in grades 6 – 12
You can get each level separately or you can get it in the following bundles:
- Levels 1 and 2 Bundle
- Levels 2 and 3 Bundle
- Levels 1, 2, and 3 Bundle – most economical!
And there are several options to meet your needs
The CD version is for home use.
The Deluxe version is also for home use, but can be used by schools, too. It allows for more detailed student monitoring through its connection to the internet. The student never needs to go to this internet site though. The Deluxe version also permits math tournaments to encourage performance.
The network version is only for schools. It would be used with the school's networking system.
So, this all sounds like fun. But does it work?
Yes!
Research has shown that “the student groups using Quarter Mile Math averaged a 35% improvement vs the control groups that averaged only 14%!!”
This program is so effective that Sylvan Learning Centers chose it for use in all 1,100+ centers in the United States and Canada.
And this program has won a bunch of awards:
- “The Cream of the Crop” by Instructor Magazine
- “ “All Star Award” by Children’s Software Review
- “ “An invaluable resource” by Institute for School Innovation
- “ “Best Software” and “Math Company of the Year” by Old Schoolhouse Magazine
- “#1 in “Math Drill” in 2006, 2004, 2002, 2000, 1996 by Practical Homeschooling
