Squeeze Machine. Hug Box. Squeeze Box. Hug Machine. What in the world are these things? Are they G-rated or X-rated? Well, they are all the same thing! And it is for children and adults with autism! Temple Grandin, PhD noticed that cattle in a tight chute immediately calmed down from the deep pressure. Since she also has an intense need for deep pressure due to her sensory integration dysfunction , she designed her own device. She found that the use of this squeeze box provided just the right amount of pressure to ease her anxiety. By adjusting the lever, anyone can control their own pressure to meet their own needs. The effectiveness of her hug machine has been confirmed throughout the country. You can find out more about her experience with her hug box in the following books by Dr. Grandin herself.
Just click on the following banner and then search for these books.
Also, you can purchase, lease or rent your own hug box by contacting Thera/Fin Corporation. They also have a terrific brochure so that you can learn more about the squeeze box.
But, what if you can not afford your own squeeze machine? Or you do not have space for it in your house? Then, you can use a weighted product! Many parents have noticed that weighted blankets provide similar improvements for their child. Weighted vests and weighted neck wraps and weighted lap pads are also extremely beneficial. You can also implement deep pressure techniques at home! Just roll your child up in a blanket, or gently squeeze your child between sofa cushions! My daughter with PDD-NOS likes to cuddle up in a blanket in her small pop-up tent thoroughly padded with various cushions and pillows. Actually, she never slept alone at night until we put this tent arrangement on her bed! Deep pressure is an essential sensation for many individuals with autism. So, experiment a bit and find the best way to provide deep pressure for your child.
